Lake Norman is North Carolina's largest man-made lake, built by Duke Energy on the Catawba River. It's a reservoir — meaning structure is everything. The original river channel, submerged creek channels, and old roadbeds are where bass stage, feed, and spend winter. Bill's Creek
Long, winding creek arm on the upper lake with woody cover, laydowns, and a classic bass migration path. Spring pre-spawn bass stack at the mouth before pushing back.

Ramsey Creek
Protected cove with shallow spawning flats and deeper secondary points at the mouth. One of the most consistent areas on the whole lake across seasons.

Marshall Steam Plant
Duke Energy's thermal discharge keeps water 8–12°F warmer in winter. Bass congregate here December through February. Some of the only reliable winter shallow fishing on Norman.

Deep main-lake point with rock riprap along the bridge approach and defined ledges dropping into the old Catawba channel. Summer ledge game starts here.

Shallow timber-filled creek with multiple feeder channels. Topwater in the backs of pockets during fall when shad push shallow. Excellent frog water in summer.

Spring
Pre-spawn (50–65°F) is the best big-fish window of the year. Bass move from winter depth toward spawning flats via main lake points → secondary points → pocket points. Start fishing secondary points before the backs of creeks. Squarebill crankbaits on rocky banks, bladed jigs through emerging grass. When water hits 65–72°F, beds appear on sandy flats in 2–6 feet of water.
Summer
Two-phase approach. Early morning (first 90 minutes of light): topwater over grass, frogs around dock edges, walking baits near the steam plant. Mid-day: move deep to the Catawba channel ledges at 18–28 feet. Football jigs dragged slowly, big flutter spoons, deep-diving crankbaits deflecting off structure. The shad school on the ledges — find the baitfish, find the bass.
Fall
Follow the shad migration. As water cools through September and October, shad push into creek backs and bass follow aggressively. Lipless crankbaits ripped through dying grass, squarebills along the bank, spinnerbaits in stained water pockets. When the water hits 60°F expect a feeding frenzy that lasts 2–3 weeks — this is the easiest big-bag fishing of the year.
Winter
Slow down dramatically. Bass retreat to the deepest available water near creek channel intersections (18–40 feet). Marshall Steam Plant warm water discharge is the one reliable exception — bass hold shallow there December through February. Jerkbaits with 5–10 second pauses, blade baits for vertical jigging, and hair jigs crept along bluff walls.
Lake Norman runs mostly clear to slightly stained depending on rainfall. Natural, subtle presentations outperform loud colors the majority of the time. After heavy rain events, bump to stained-water colors (junebug, black/blue) for a week until it clears.

Lake Norman has multiple public boat ramps managed by NCWRC and local municipalities. Most are free or low-cost. Arrive early on weekends — ramps get congested during peak season.
